Mayan Ruins of Tulum: Day Trip from Playa del Carmen

Explore ancient cliff-top temples overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea

Tulum: Mexico’s Most Scenic Archaeological Site

Perched on a 12-meter limestone cliff above the Caribbean, the walled city of Tulum stands as one of the most photographed and most visited ancient Mayan sites in the world. Unlike the inland jungle ruins of Chichen Itza or Uxmal, Tulum offers something rare: temples and towers framed by turquoise sea, accessible in under an hour from Playa del Carmen.

The archaeological zone dates primarily to the Post-Classic period, from roughly 1200 to 1550 CE, making Tulum one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya before Spanish contact. Its location on the coast made it a critical trading hub, and the great wall that encloses three sides of the city still stands today, a testament to the engineering sophistication of its builders.

Key Ruins to See on Your Visit

The Castillo is the most prominent structure at the site, a stepped pyramid that once served as a lighthouse guiding canoes through the reef. The Temple of the Frescoes houses remarkably well-preserved murals depicting Mayan deities and cosmological symbols. The Temple of the Descending God features a unique upside-down figure carved above the doorway, believed to represent the setting sun or a bee deity worshipped by the Maya.

At the base of the cliff below the Castillo, there is a small beach where you can swim in the sea directly beneath the ruins. The turquoise water and pale sand make this one of the most surreal swimming spots in Mexico. Plan to spend two to three hours at the site to explore properly and still have time for a swim.

Getting There from Playa del Carmen

The Tulum ruins are located approximately 65 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, a journey of about 45 to 60 minutes by car or van. For groups, renting a private van is the most comfortable and efficient option. Your driver can wait at the site while you explore and take you directly back to your villa, with no waiting for buses or colectivos.

The ADO bus is also an option from the Playa del Carmen bus terminal on Fifth Avenue, with frequent daily departures at an economical price. The journey takes about 75 minutes. From the Tulum bus station, a taxi or collectivo to the ruins takes about 10 minutes.

Planning Your Tulum Day Trip

Arrive at the ruins before 9 AM if at all possible. By mid-morning the site becomes crowded, and the heat along the exposed clifftop can be intense from 11 AM onward. The site opens at 8 AM. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. Water is available at the entrance, but prices are steep inside; bring your own bottles from the villa.

Combine your Tulum ruins visit with a nearby cenote for a full day out. Gran Cenote is just two kilometers from the ruins and offers snorkeling among freshwater fish and cave formations. Dos Ojos and Cenote Calavera are also popular stops on the same road. Most groups can cover ruins plus cenote in a comfortable half-day and be back at the villa by mid-afternoon.
