Playa del Carmen sits at 20°N latitude, which means it has two reliable seasons: dry (November–April) and wet (May–October). But that description barely scratches the surface. The real story is in the nuances — the shoulder season deals, the hurricane window, the sargassum calendar, and which months are quietly the best-kept secrets for travelers.
Here’s the month-by-month breakdown for 2026 so you can plan with confidence.

⭐ November — Our personal favorite. The rainy season just ended, sargassum is minimal, beaches are clean, temperatures are perfect (not as humid as summer), and crowds haven’t built back up yet. Villa prices are significantly lower than December–March peak. If you’re flexible, this is your month.
⭐ May — The other shoulder season gem. School year is still in session in the US, so crowds are low. Weather is warm and sunny with occasional afternoon showers that cool things down perfectly. Sargassum can start showing up in May, but it’s usually manageable. For groups looking for the best value, May is hard to beat.
December–March (Peak Season) — The safest bet weather-wise. No surprises, minimal sargassum, clear skies, warm water. Trade-off: highest prices and most crowded beaches. Worth it if you need certainty or it’s your only vacation window.
July–August — Popular for families with school-age kids and European travelers. Warmer and more humid, sargassum can be heavy, but cenotes are still perfect. Villa stays make this work because you’re not dependent on beach access every day.

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30, with peak risk in August–October. For Playa del Carmen specifically:
The good news: private villas in Playacar Phase 1 are built to high standards, and our team monitors conditions and communicates proactively with guests.
Sargassum seaweed has become a recurring challenge along the Caribbean coast since around 2011. Here’s a realistic picture:
Important note: even in heavy sargassum months, cenotes are completely unaffected. Many of our guests pivot to cenote days when the beach has seaweed — and often decide that was the best decision of the trip. For more details, see our complete sargassum guide.
December–March (Dry Season):
May–October (Wet/Shoulder Season):
Year-round must-haves: reef-safe sunscreen, a reusable water bottle (tap water in Mexico is not potable), and at least one nice outfit for an evening out on 5th Avenue.
Playa del Carmen’s temperature range is surprisingly narrow year-round. Winters average 24–29°C (75–84°F); summers average 28–33°C (82–91°F). You’re never dealing with cold weather — the question is really about humidity, rain, and crowds.
For villa stays, the pool makes everything better regardless of season. An afternoon thunderstorm in July followed by a swim in your private pool at sunset? That’s actually a great travel day.
