Related: our roundup of the best places to stay in Playa del Carmen.
If you’re staying with us in Playacar, you’ve landed in one of the best-kept secrets on the Riviera Maya. This isn’t your typical tourist hotel zone. Playacar Phase 1 is a quiet, lush, gated residential community sitting right next to the beach, with easy walking access to everything Playa del Carmen has to offer. Think Caribbean vibes, swaying palms, and zero resort crowds.
This guide is written like a local friend giving you the real scoop. No fluff, just the good stuff.
Playacar Phase 1 is a gated community that runs along the southern edge of downtown Playa del Carmen. It’s private, secure, and beautifully maintained. The security gates are staffed 24/7, so you can sleep easy and let the kids run around without worry.
Getting around is easy and affordable. Here’s what we recommend:
Download InDrive before you arrive. It’s a ride-hailing app that works like Uber, but you negotiate the fare. Rides into central Playa del Carmen typically run 40 to 80 pesos (about $2 to $4 USD). It’s the most reliable and transparent option we’ve found.
White taxis are everywhere. Agree on a price before you get in (always ask “cuanto cuesta?”). Expect 80 to 150 pesos for most local trips. Taxis are perfectly safe and widely used by locals and tourists alike.
The beach is a 1-minute walk. The entrance to 5th Avenue (La Quinta) is about a 10-minute walk or a quick 2-minute cab ride. Chedraui grocery store is about 8 minutes by cab.
Cancun International Airport is about 45 minutes away (traffic-dependent). For groups, we strongly recommend Pablo, who handles transfers for groups of 4 to 20 people in comfortable vans. Reach him on WhatsApp: +52 984 150 9680. Book in advance, especially around holidays.
Playa del Carmen has several distinct beach areas, each with its own personality.
The beach at the foot of Playacar Phase 1 is calm, relatively uncrowded, and gorgeous. The water here tends to be calmer than the main beach further north. Bring a blanket or rent chairs from one of the small beach clubs. The seaweed situation varies by season (May to August can bring more sargassum), but it’s often cleaned daily.
Head north along the beach or hop a cab to reach the livelier beach club scene. Mamitas, Kool, and Zenzi are popular spots where you can pay a food/drink minimum and get a lounger and umbrella. Great for a full beach day with service.
The Caribbean here is that iconic turquoise blue. Water temperature is warm year-round (around 27-29°C / 80-84°F). Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a good hat, and flip flops for the rocky entry at some spots. Most beaches don’t require reef shoes.
5th Avenue is Playa del Carmen’s famous pedestrian street, stretching for dozens of blocks through the heart of downtown. No cars, just good vibes. It’s lined with restaurants, shops, bars, juice stands, and street performers.
You could spend hours here just wandering. Our suggestions:
Ask any local and they’ll have their own list. Here’s ours, built from years of recommendations and repeat visits:
For private dining: We recommend Chef Coty for in-villa private chef experiences. She’s excellent and very popular, so book early. For kosher dining, Chef Moti is outstanding.
The Riviera Maya is one of the world’s great adventure travel destinations. Here’s what we love sending guests to:
Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes sacred to the Maya, and the Yucatan Peninsula has hundreds. They’re absolutely magical for swimming and snorkeling. Top picks: Cenote Azul, Dos Ojos, and Gran Cenote near Tulum. Most are 30 to 60 minutes away.
About 1 hour south, the Tulum archaeological site sits on a clifftop above the Caribbean. One of the most photogenic ruins in Mexico. Go early (open at 8am) to beat the heat and crowds. The view from the top is worth every step.
Hop a ferry from the Playa del Carmen pier (about 45 minutes). Cozumel is famous for some of the world’s best coral reef diving and snorkeling. Even if you don’t dive, the island is beautiful for a day trip. The ferry runs frequently.
From June through September, you can swim with whale sharks off Isla Mujeres. This is one of the most incredible experiences on earth. Tours depart from Playa del Carmen or Cancun and fill up fast. Book at least a week in advance.
A large eco-archaeological park about 5 minutes from Playacar. It’s a full day of cenotes, ruins, wildlife, cultural shows, and more. It’s on the pricier side but worth it, especially for families. The evening show is spectacular.
For group excursions, private transfers, or custom day trips, we love working with Mahora Concierge. Tell them which villa you’re staying at and they’ll take great care of you.
You won’t need to pack much. Everything is available locally:
For nails, we send our guests to Y&Y Estudio, one of our local partners. Yisel runs a private nail studio in Playa del Carmen and also comes directly to your villa for manicures, pedicures, gel, acrylics, and advanced foot care. Professional, hygienic, and bilingual (English and Spanish). Book on WhatsApp: +52 984 146 7584.
We get asked about safety a lot, and we’re happy to give you the honest picture.
Playacar Phase 1 is one of the safest areas in the region. The community has 24/7 gated security with staffed checkpoints. Residents and long-term guests live here year-round, including many families with young children. Walking inside the community at night is perfectly fine.
Playa del Carmen itself is a well-established tourist town with a large expat and international community. The tourist areas along 5th Avenue are busy and well-lit. Like any destination, just use common sense: don’t flash expensive jewelry, be aware of your surroundings, and stick to known areas at night if you’re unfamiliar with the city.
The short version: most guests are surprised by how relaxed and safe they feel here.
Playa del Carmen has great weather nearly year-round. Here’s a quick breakdown:
