Shopping in Playa del Carmen

Artisan markets, designer boutiques, and hand-crafted treasures await along the Riviera Maya’s most celebrated shopping destination.

Where to Shop in Playa del Carmen

Shopping in Playa del Carmen is a joy whether you are searching for one-of-a-kind keepsakes, high-quality resort wear, or the kind of authentic Mexican craftsmanship that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. The city offers a wonderful range of retail experiences, from the famous open-air stalls of 5th Avenue to quieter boutiques tucked into side streets where the real finds often live.

For groups arriving from North America or Europe, the shopping here feels both exotic and surprisingly accessible. English is widely spoken in most shops, prices in tourist areas are often quoted in US dollars, and credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere on 5th Avenue.

5th Avenue: The Main Shopping Strip

Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is the undisputed center of Playa del Carmen shopping life. This pedestrian-only boulevard stretches more than two kilometers and packs in hundreds of shops, galleries, and vendor stalls. The southern section near Calle 1 is home to upscale boutiques and jewelry shops, while the northern blocks become progressively more casual and market-like as you head toward Calle 40 and beyond.

Highlights include hand-painted Talavera ceramics, silver jewelry crafted by artisans from Taxco, traditional huipil blouses in vibrant embroidered fabric, blown glass pieces from Jalisco, and a seemingly endless selection of hammocks in every size and color. Bargaining is expected and welcomed at most stalls; a friendly smile and a patient attitude go a long way.

Beyond the Avenue: Hidden Gems

Some of the best shopping in Playa del Carmen happens just off the main strip. The streets parallel to 5th Avenue, particularly Calle 8, 10, and 12, are lined with smaller independent shops and galleries that cater to a slightly more discerning buyer. Here you will find contemporary Mexican art, handmade leather sandals custom-fitted on the spot, organic local products like vanilla extract and artisan mezcal, and fashion pieces from regional designers that you will not find in any international mall.

Playacar Plaza, located right at the entrance to the Playacar neighborhood, offers convenient everyday shopping including a grocery store, pharmacies, and a handful of souvenir shops. For larger grocery runs, Chedraui is a full-service supermarket just 8 minutes by taxi that stocks everything from fresh produce to wine and specialty items.

Group Shopping Tips

Traveling with a group? Coordinate a morning shopping expedition along 5th Avenue, then reconvene for lunch at one of the avenue’s open-air restaurants. Shopping in smaller sub-groups of two or three people and meeting up at a set time tends to work better than moving the whole group together through a crowded market.

Having a private villa as your home base makes hauling purchases back easy and pleasant. Rather than juggling shopping bags on a shuttle back to a hotel lobby, you return to your own space, drop everything off, and head back out. Our guests at Villa Vista Real and Dos Villas Perla Marena consistently tell us that having a real home to return to transforms the shopping experience entirely.
