When Not to Go to Playa del Carmen

Short answer: most of the year is great. A few specific weeks are genuinely worth avoiding for hurricane risk, sargassum, or pure crowd reasons. Here is the honest local calendar.

Most of the year, Playa del Carmen is wonderful. But there are a few windows that are honestly worth avoiding if you have flexibility on dates. We are local hosts, we see the calendar play out every year, so here is the unvarnished version.

Late August through mid-October: hurricane season peak

Quintana Roo officially has hurricane season from June through November, but the genuine peak risk window is mid-August through mid-October. In an average year you have a 5 to 10 percent chance of a tropical storm or hurricane disrupting your trip. In a bad year (think 2005, 2017, 2021) it can be much higher.

The risk is not just the storm itself. It is the cascading mess: airline cancellations, beach closures, sargassum churned up by passing systems, restaurants and tour operators closed for safety, choppy seas killing snorkeling and ferry trips. If your trip has any rigid dates (a wedding, a milestone birthday, a flight you cannot reschedule), avoid this window.

May and June: sargassum peak

Sargassum is the brown seaweed that washes up on Caribbean beaches. Some years it is barely noticeable. Other years (especially 2018, 2022, 2023) it has been a real problem from May through July. Playa beaches are cleaned daily, but if pristine white sand is your priority, May-July is a coin flip. Cozumel and Holbox tend to get less of it, and inland cenote-focused trips are unaffected.

The genuinely worst week

If we had to pick one single worst week of the year, it would be the second week of September. Hurricane probability at annual peak, sargassum can still be lingering, and prices are not low enough to justify the risk.

The best windows

  • Late November through mid-December. Perfect weather, no crowds, prices not yet at holiday peaks.
  • Mid-January through late February. Cool nights, dry, perfect for active days.
  • Late April into early May. Pre-sargassum, post spring break. Often the warmest sunny weather of the year.
  • Late October through November. Hurricane season effectively over by Halloween. Day of the Dead celebrations are special.
