Short answer: Cabo, Punta Mita, Careyes, San Miguel, Playacar. The Mexico-based wealthy do not concentrate where the press attention is. They prioritize privacy, low crowds, and access. Here is the honest insider map.
The "where do wealthy people go" question really has two answers depending on what kind of wealth you mean. Old-money Mexican families, hedge fund executives, retired CEOs, tech founders, and Hollywood A-listers do not all pick the same spot. Here is the honest insider map.
| Destination | State | Crowd | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Cabos | BCS | Hollywood, SV, Texas oil | Polished resort + private estates |
| Punta Mita | Nayarit | US tech and finance | Quiet country-club Pacific |
| Careyes | Jalisco | European nobility, art world | Bohemian billionaire enclave |
| San Miguel | Guanajuato | Cultural, expat retirees | Colonial sophistication |
| Playacar Phase 1 | Quintana Roo | Mexican old money, Euro 2nd homes | Gated residential luxury |
| Polanco / Lomas (CDMX) | CDMX | Mexican capital wealth | Urban elite |
Cabo is where Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and Texas oil money go. Cabo San Lucas is louder, San Jose del Cabo is quieter and where the most expensive private homes are. The corridor in between (Pedregal, Querencia, Esperanza, Chileno Bay) is dotted with $5M to $50M private estates. Top hotels: One&Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Esperanza, Chileno Bay.
The discrete favorite of US tech and finance executives. Punta Mita is a 1,500-acre gated peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta with two Jack Nicklaus courses, a Four Seasons, a St. Regis, and dozens of private homes that go for $10M to $40M. Less press than Cabo, more quietly wealthy.
The opposite of Cabo's polish. Careyes is an artist-and-bohemian-billionaire enclave on the Pacific coast. Founded by Italian banking family Brignone, the town has 200 colorful private villas, no chain hotels, and a culture of polo, art, and total disconnection. If you have to ask the price, you are not the customer.
The choice for cultural wealth rather than beach wealth. San Miguel is a UNESCO colonial town with the largest American expat retiree community in Mexico (estimated 10,000+ permanent residents). Restored 18th-century homes, personal chefs, quiet pace. Rosewood San Miguel and Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada anchor the high end.

Quietly, Playacar Phase 1 has been where Mexican old-money families and a number of US, Canadian, and European second-home owners have based for over 30 years. Gated golf-course community on the south side of Playa del Carmen with 24-hour security, walking distance to the beach and 5th Avenue, approximately 800 private homes ranging from $1M to $15M.
The vibe is more residential and family-oriented than Tulum's beach scene. Multi-generational reunions, low-key luxury, professional families. Less Instagram, more actual long stays.
If you are booking

The wealthy class of Mexico itself lives in Polanco, Lomas, San Angel, Coyoacan, and parts of Roma Norte. For visitors, the high-end hotels (St. Regis, Four Seasons, Las Alcobas) and the expensive private homes available for short rental are concentrated in Polanco and Lomas. Dining culture rivals New York or London at the top end.
The Mexico-based wealthy do not concentrate where the press attention is. They prioritize privacy, low crowds, and access. Cabo is the exception (because it is so big), but Punta Mita, Careyes, San Miguel, and Playacar Phase 1 all share a private-residential character with limited mass-tourism dilution.
All 13 of our villas are inside the gated community where Mexican old-money families and international second-home owners have based for 30 years.
