You are planning a group vacation. Mexico is on the short list. So is the Caribbean — Jamaica, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, maybe St. Lucia or Barbados. They all look incredible in photos. How do you choose?
We have put Playa del Carmen, Mexico against the most popular Caribbean destinations, across the factors that actually matter for a group trip. The result might surprise you — or it might confirm what you already suspected.
Cost: Resort and villa costs vary significantly by dates, group size, and what is included. Compare current full-stay totals for the exact dates and number of rooms your group needs before choosing between Jamaica and Playa del Carmen.
Villa availability: Jamaica has villas, but the private villa inventory for large groups is far more limited and more expensive than PDC. Playa del Carmen has a robust, well-established villa market with options for groups of 4 to 50 at competitive rates.
Things to do: Both destinations offer beaches, culture, and adventure. But PDC has an edge on sheer variety: cenotes (unique to Mexico and Belize), Mayan ruins, Cozumel’s coral reef, Tulum, and the shopping and nightlife of 5th Avenue. Jamaica’s highlights are wonderful, but the list is shorter.
Accessibility: Cancun receives more direct flights from more North American cities than any Jamaican airport. For most US and Canadian groups, the flight is easier and often cheaper.
Food: Mexican cuisine is a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. Jamaica’s food scene is excellent, but Mexico is simply in a different league in terms of diversity, quality, and the ability to eat extraordinarily well at every price point.
Winner: Mexico (Playa del Carmen)
Cost: Pricing in the Bahamas and Playa del Carmen changes by island, season, transportation, and the type of stay. Compare current full-stay totals, including the number of rooms and transfers your group needs.
Beach quality: Both have stunning beaches. The Bahamas are famous for their pink-sand beaches and dramatic blue holes. PDC and Playacar Phase 1 have brilliant white sand and turquoise Caribbean water that genuinely compete. The difference: PDC’s beaches are far more accessible without multiple flights or ferry connections.
Villa inventory: Nassau and Paradise Island have some villa options, but the market is dominated by large resorts. The private villa scene in PDC is mature, competitive, and offers far more choice at better prices for groups of 10 or more.
Things to do: The Bahamas excels at water-based activities — swimming pigs, blue holes, snorkeling. Mexico adds Mayan ruins, cenotes, jungle, authentic markets, and a cultural depth that the Bahamas cannot match.
Weather: Both are Caribbean and broadly similar. Mexico is marginally more sheltered during hurricane season.
Winner: Mexico (Playa del Carmen)
Cost: Turks and Caicos and Playa del Carmen offer very different types of stays. Compare current accommodation, dining, transportation, and excursion totals for your dates rather than relying on a universal price claim.
Beach quality: Here is where TCI legitimately competes. Grace Bay is frequently rated among the top beaches in the world. The sand is powdery, the water is clear, and the setting is postcard-perfect. PDC’s beaches in Playacar Phase 1 are stunning, but let us be honest: Grace Bay is extraordinary.
Things to do: TCI’s appeal is primarily the beach. The island is quiet, beautiful, and relaxing. But if your group wants activity — nightlife, culture, adventure, day trips — Turks and Caicos will feel limited after a couple of days. PDC has a week’s worth of experiences without repeating yourself.
Value: For a group, the useful comparison is the complete trip total: one private villa versus the number of resort rooms required, plus dining, transportation, and activities for the same dates.
Food and culture: Mexico wins emphatically. TCI has good restaurants, but nothing approaching the food culture, diversity, and depth of Mexico.
Winner: Mexico (Playa del Carmen), unless beach perfection alone is worth the premium — and for most groups, it is not.
When you look at the full picture — cost, villa availability, activities, food, culture, accessibility, and the sheer range of experiences available — Playa del Carmen consistently outperforms its Caribbean competitors for group vacations. Here is the summary:
